This is our incredible 7yr old Friesian/Quarter horse gelding affectionate known as “Comanche”.
Comanche belongs to our clients (more like family friends now) who bought him from his breeder as a 3year old.
I was the one who picked him up in Texas and put the first ride on him when he arrived to Alabama.
If you’ve spent any amount of time around Friesians or Friesian crosses, you know teaching them to have a soft, balanced lope can be difficult. When I first started riding Commanche, even though he was green at the time, one of the many things that was impressive about him was how balanced and straight between the reins he was in all his gaits.
We’ve put a lot of time on Comanche here at Double C and so have his owners in North Alabama. He has all the buttons any horseman would want; a good stop and back up, sidepass, turnaround/spin, shoulder in shoulder out, hip control, etc. He will ride long and low for the ranch riding classes but will also pick his head up working cattle, roping, trail riding and stay “on the bit” for jumping and dressage. Although he doesn’t require any groundwork before being ridden, he lunges walk trot canter on a loose lead in the arena and over obstacles, roundpens, backs up, stands for desensitizing, flexes and lays down. He is good for the farrier, bathing, saddling, bridling and is easy to catch and great out in a herd or stalled.
This is a sturdy made gelding with great feet, bone and hair. He would make the ideal husband horse and can pack around a heavier rider with ease.
Comanche has had a lot of miles on our 400 acre property pushing cows, riding out alone, going through town, etc. He has also been rode in parades, tons of off property trail rides and we also took him to mule day in Columbia, TN in 2023 where he rode through drive throughs, down highways and past tons of traffic (bikes, mule drawn wagons, etc).
Comanche is very gentle and has had a variety of riders on him. What’s special about Comanche is he meets the needs of his riders. A more experienced rider can get Comanche doing just about any thing or any job under saddle. For a less experienced rider he will just put around in the arena or down the trail.
Comanche is neat because he will step up for any task at hand whether that be rounding up cattle, going for a nice canter in the pasture or performing a ranch riding pattern. He is also happy just going for a nice easy trail ride through the mountains or down the road with friends.
This horse has been well loved since he set foot in Alabama, the only reason he is for sale is his owners have gotten into reining horses. After thinking long and hard they have decided that Comanche deserves his own person since they aren’t using him as much anymore. He is not a “trader” horse and we do not sell any horses that we have not spent a lot of time with and don’t know inside and out.
This amazing gelding is truly one of a kind. I’ve yet to ride another draft cross like him. Anybody is welcome to come visit and ride him at our farm in Vincent, Alabama.
Comanche has never been lame and requires zero maintenance. He has no lumps, bumps, scars or blemishes. We keep shoes on the front for riding down dirt roads and on rocky trails but he’s been barefoot with no issues as well.
We want the best home ever for Comanche, he truly deserves it. If we didn’t cover something specific in our video you’d like to see, please reach out at anytime!
