However, nobody questions that a combination of superb climate and large numbers of horses and ponies makes Ocala a hotspot for horse lovers. There are over 35,000 Thoroughbreds in Florida, many of which are engaged in racing. There are 1,300 TB owners, breeders, and trainers located throughout the state, with Ocala/Marion County a key location. Champion Quarter Horses are also well represented, such as those bred at Prince Farm, Palmetto. Florida is believed to have the third-largest population of AQHs in the USA. Next, comes the Standardbred Horse, which is perhaps not surprising given Florida’s love of racing. Standardbreds are superb harness racers, and they also make great all-around pleasure driving horses.
As the state with the third-largest horse population in the USA, the Florida horse industry makes a huge contribution to the economy annually. Horse ownership in this state is estimated to be worth $6.8 billion dollars. However, when all totals are added up, including tourism, that rises to over $11.7 billion. Florida’s 500,000 horses contribute to the creation of over 113,000 jobs. There’s no mistaking the especially important contribution made by Thoroughbreds, which make up an estimated 250,000 horses of the state’s total population. There are also estimated to be 600 Thoroughbred horse farms and training centers in Florida. Many are focused in the Ocala-Marion County area. The breeders’ sales at Ocala are believed to have produced $1 billion in Thoroughbred horse sales over eight years. Thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing contribute $2.7 billion of the equine total contribution, and 23,000 of the total jobs in the equine sector.
Florida was settled by Europeans in the sixteenth century. The earliest arrivals were Spanish missionaries and ranchers. When the Spanish arrived, they brought horses with them that were mainly used for cattle herding. Today, the descendants of these first horses are represented by a rare breed, the Florida Cracker Horse. The ancestors of these agile cow ponies were small, swift, and easy to keep. The “cracker” part came from the noise of the whips of the herders. These were highly prized by the local people as well as Europeans. By the 1930s, the Crackers were in danger of disappearing due to the almost universal use of the bigger, stronger Quarter Horse as stock horses. In 1989, there were believed to be just 31 examples of the Florida Cracker Horse left. Then, the Florida Cracker Horse Association was formed to ensure the breed continued. By the late twentieth century, the climate of Florida had drawn thousands of horse lovers and many more breeds. Ocala/Marion County became not only the center of horse racing but also home to Florida’s Horse Park. This is the location of national and international events. One of the biggest is the Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) Ocala Winter Circuit.
Florida is home to local associations of all the major American horse breeds, and also associations for many other types of horse. Regional organizations for many disciplines are found here, too. The headquarters of the Florida Cracker Horse Association is in Tallahassee, Florida.
The superb climate of the Sunshine State means that diverse horse breeds and most equestrian disciplines are well-represented here. Equestrianism is a year-round activity. Competitive events include showing, show jumping, dressage, cross country and eventing, racing, polo, and rodeo. In addition, Florida is home to many world-class trainers in every discipline.
Ocala has produced several Kentucky Derby winners. One of the best-known was Needles, who acquired his unusual name because he needed a lot of veterinary treatment, including injections when he was young. Needles won the Kentucky Derby in 1958. Sunny Florida is now home to the Royal Lipizzan Stallions, a stunning team of classical dressage display horses.
Florida is situated on the Southeastern Seaboard of the USA. Its capital is Tallahassee. The population is 21.48 million, and nearly 250,000 people either own horses or are related service providers.
